STORY BEHIND THE DISH:

All the grandchildren enjoy these cookies.


INGREDIENTS:
3/4 cup shortening 1 tsp baking soda
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 egg 1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup molasses 1/2 tsp cloves (optional)
1 cup flour 1 tsp ginger

DIRECTIONS:

Cream shortening, add brown sugar and cream thoroughly. Blend in beaten egg and molasses. Add flour and all dry ingredients. Mix well and chill dough. Form balls the size of a walnut and dip in sugar. Put unsugared side on baking sheet. Spritz (sprinkle) each with a few drops of water. Bake in moderate oven 320 deg F for 12 minutes. Yields 5 dozen cookies.
