STORY BEHIND THE DISH:

The recipe was given to my mother by a parishioner, Mrs. Gill, when we lived in Dilley, Texas (about 1935). Since I was in the 2nd grade, it has been a favorite.

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup white sugar
3 cups flour
1 cup Crisco
1 tsp salt
3 eggs, well beaten
1 lb chopped dates
1 tsp baking soda dissolved in 3 Tbls hot water
1 cup nuts

DIRECTIONS:

Cream sugars & Crisco. Add eggs. Beat well. Add dissolved baking soda/water mix. Add vanilla. Add flour, salt, dates, & nuts. Mix. Drop by teaspoon on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 9-12 minutes at 360 F. (Watch carefully after 9 minutes.) Alternatively, the dough can be spread in a pan for bars and baked for about 20 minutes.
